What these jobs look like in Milton Keynes.
Because Milton Keynes was built quickly and mostly since 1970, block paving is close to the default driveway surface across the city. That gives the work here a different shape to a town with older housing: far fewer front gardens being converted, far more existing block drives that have started to move.
Relaying is genuinely the right answer more often in MK than almost anywhere we work, and it is meaningfully cheaper than a full replacement.
Matching a discontinued developer block
The estates built between the late 1990s and the mid 2000s used block ranges that manufacturers have since discontinued or reformulated, and twenty years of weathering means even a genuine colour match off the shelf will not match what is on your drive. Our approach is to lift blocks from somewhere inconspicuous — under where a car sits, or behind a gate — use those in the visible repair, and put the new blocks in the hidden area. It takes longer than laying new blocks in the hole and it is the difference between a repair you can see from the pavement and one you cannot.
Lift and relay, or replace
The test is whether the blocks themselves are sound and whether the sub-base can be corrected without digging the lot out. If the surface is rutted along the wheel tracks but the blocks are undamaged, lifting the affected area, correcting the base and relaying is usually the better value job by a wide margin.
If the blocks are spalling, the drive has sunk across the whole area, or somebody has already relaid it once with sand used to make up the levels, then the base is the problem and a partial repair just moves the dip a metre to the left.
- Lift and relay
Blocks lifted and stacked, base corrected and recompacted, laying course re-screeded, same blocks relaid and rejointed. Typically two to three days on a domestic drive and no colour-match problem.
- Full replacement
Everything out to formation level, new membrane, new sub-base to the depth the ground actually needs, new edging, new blocks. Three to five days, and the point at which it is worth reconsidering the surface entirely.
Permeable block paving
Permeable block paving is worth understanding in MK specifically, because so many estates drain to a shared system and adding another impermeable surface to it is not always welcome. Permeable blocks have wider joints filled with grit rather than sand, sitting on an open-graded stone sub-base that holds water and lets it soak away.
It costs more per square metre than standard block paving and it removes the drainage question entirely, along with the need for planning permission at the front of a house. On clay it needs designing properly — clay does not soak away quickly, so the sub-base has to store the water and release it, sometimes with an outlet. That is a design decision, not a product choice.

A typical two-car driveway is three to five working days on site: dig out and cart away, lay and compact the sub-base, edge it, then surface it. Resin and concrete both need a dry weather window, so dates move in a wet week.
Lead time depends on the season — spring and early autumn are the busiest.

How much does it cost to relay a block driveway?
Relaying an existing drive is usually well under the cost of replacing it, because the blocks — the most expensive single item — are already paid for. The variable is how much of the base needs correcting. We price the lift and relay per square metre after seeing how far the movement extends, which is not something that can be judged from a photo.
Why has my block paving gone wavy?
Almost always the laying course. If sand was used to make up an uneven sub-base rather than kept to a consistent 30–40mm, it compacts unevenly under traffic and the surface follows it. It is a build fault, it will not settle out, and the fix is to correct the base.
Are weeds in block paving a sign of a bad job?
Not on their own. Weeds germinate in windblown dirt sitting in the joints, not from below, so they turn up on good drives too. Persistent moss and weed growth in the same spot usually means water is standing there, which is worth looking at.
Can you match the blocks on my estate?
Often, but rarely perfectly on a drive more than about ten years old. We plan repairs so the new blocks go somewhere they are not seen and the weathered originals go in the visible area.
