What these jobs look like in Milton Keynes.
Milton Keynes is unusual to work in because the housing arrives in distinct waves and each one behaves differently. The 1970s and 80s Development Corporation estates — Netherfield, Beanhill, Coffee Hall, Bradwell Common, Great Holm — were designed around communal parking courts rather than individual drives, so a lot of what we are asked about there is creating a private parking space where the original layout did not have one.
The 1990s and 2000s expansion — Furzton, Emerson Valley, Shenley Brook End, Walnut Tree, Monkston — is where most straightforward replacement work is. Those drives are typically block paved, now twenty to thirty years old, and rutting along the wheel tracks.
The newest estates at Brooklands, Whitehouse, Tattenhoe Park and Oakgrove are still under warranty in places, but the pattern is already showing: developer-spec block paving with a thin sub-base, sinking first where cars turn.
Grid roads, service roads and who owns the tarmac
The MK grid means most houses do not front onto a public highway directly — they come off a service road or a parking court, and the ownership of that surface varies. Some are adopted highway, some belong to a management company, some are shared private drives with no clear maintenance agreement. It matters, because it decides whether you need a vehicle crossing from Milton Keynes City Council, permission from a management company, or nothing at all. We check which one you are dealing with before quoting rather than leaving you to find out afterwards.
Shared driveways and parking courts
A large share of MK properties share their access with a neighbour, or open onto a court that several houses use. That changes a driveway job in two ways. First, you may not own the surface you want to resurface — worth establishing from the deeds before anyone quotes it. Second, the work has to keep the court usable while it happens, because blocking four other households in for three days is not an option.
We phase those jobs so at least one route stays open, and we say up front which days parking will be tight. It is the single most common source of friction on an MK driveway and it is entirely avoidable with a conversation at the survey.
Developer-spec drives on the new estates
On Brooklands, Whitehouse, Tattenhoe Park and Oakgrove, the block paving that came with the house is usually laid to a specification aimed at handover, not at year fifteen. The blocks themselves are fine. What tends to be light is the sub-base depth, and on Oxford Clay that shows up as depressions where cars turn and a lip forming at the garage threshold.
The good news is that this is often a partial job rather than a full replacement — lift the affected area, correct the base properly, relay the existing blocks. Keeping the original blocks matters here, because developer ranges get discontinued and a patch in a near-match colour is more obvious than the dip was.

Do I need permission for a driveway in Milton Keynes?
It depends on what your access comes off. Crossing a public footway needs a vehicle crossing approved by Milton Keynes City Council. Block paving, most of the time, because it matches what is already there and can be lifted and relaid in sections — useful when services run under the front garden. Resin bound is the better answer where there is a sound existing base and you want no joints and no weeds.
