Northampton block paving
What these jobs look like in Northampton.
Block paving is what most Northampton homeowners picture when they say driveway, and it is the highest-volume driveway search in the town. It suits the local housing: a brindle or burnt-red block sits naturally against Northampton's red brick and the ironstone in the older buildings, and it can be lifted and relaid in sections rather than dug out whole.
It is also the surface with the widest quality gap between one installer and the next, because almost everything that determines whether a block drive lasts twenty years or five is buried before the blocks go down.
Why edge restraint matters more on clay
Blocks do not fail in the middle. They fail at the edges, where there is nothing holding them in, and then the whole field creeps and opens up joints. On Northampton's clay that is worse, because seasonal movement gives the edge something to push against and then relax away from. Every drive we lay gets a haunched edge course bedded in concrete on both sides — not blocks butted against a lawn — and the sub-base runs past the edging rather than stopping at it. It is an unglamorous line on a quote and it is the difference between the two prices you are comparing.
What goes under a block drive
A block paved driveway is four layers and the blocks are the thinnest of them. Get the order right and the top layer is almost decorative; get it wrong and no quality of block saves it.
- Excavation
Dig to formation level and cart the spoil away. On a clay plot in Northampton that is usually 250–300mm below finished level, which is more than a lot of quotes allow for. If the ground is soft at formation, it gets dug deeper, not covered up.
- Geotextile membrane
Laid over the formation to stop the sub-base stone punching down into soft clay and disappearing over the years. Cheap material, skipped constantly.
- Sub-base
Compacted MOT Type 1, laid in layers and whacked between each one rather than dumped in one lift and rolled once. This is the structural layer. On clay we would expect 200mm minimum for a car drive.
- Laying course
30–40mm of screeded sharp sand — not building sand, and not thickened to level out a bad sub-base, which is the most common shortcut and the reason drives develop wheel ruts.
- Blocks and jointing
Blocks laid to the chosen bond, vibrated in, then kiln-dried sand brushed and vibrated into the joints in passes until they stop taking it.
Clay blocks or concrete blocks
Concrete blocks are what most Northampton drives are laid in. They are cheaper, come in every colour and profile, and modern ones hold their colour far better than the 1990s stock that faded to grey and gave block paving its reputation.
Clay pavers cost noticeably more and are worth it on a period property. The colour is fired through the whole block rather than sitting in a surface layer, so it does not fade, and it is the same material as the brick on the front of the house. On the terraces around Abington and the older parts of Kingsthorpe they look right in a way concrete does not quite manage.
Bond patterns, and which ones actually matter
Herringbone at 45 or 90 degrees is the only pattern that properly interlocks under braking and turning loads, which is why it is the default on anything a car drives on. Stretcher bond and basketweave look fine and are structurally weaker under traffic — they are better used for a border, a path or a patio than for the wheel tracks.
A double-block border in a contrasting colour around the perimeter is the standard Northampton finish and it does two jobs: it frames the drive, and it gives the field a clean line to be cut against instead of a ragged edge of half-blocks.

Installation
A typical two-car driveway is three to five working days on site: dig out and cart away, lay and compact the sub-base, edge it, then surface it. Resin and concrete both need a dry weather window, so dates move in a wet week.
Lead time depends on the season — spring and early autumn are the busiest.
FAQ
Northampton driveway questions.
How long does block paving last?
Laid properly, twenty years and beyond, and it can be lifted and relaid in sections if a service trench has to go through it. Laid on a thin sub-base with sand used to make up levels, it starts rutting in the wheel tracks within a few years — that is the failure we get called to look at most often.
Does block paving sink?
Not if the sub-base is right. Sinking is almost always a sub-base problem, not a block problem: too thin, not compacted in layers, or laid straight onto soft clay with no membrane. Localised dips around a manhole or a gully are a different issue and usually fixable by lifting and relaying that area.
Is block paving permeable?
Standard block paving on sand is not, in the sense the drainage rules mean. Permeable block paving is a different system — wider joints filled with grit, and an open-graded stone sub-base that stores water and lets it soak away. It costs more and it is what keeps you clear of needing planning permission at the front of a house.
Can you repair a section rather than replace the whole drive?
Often, yes, and it is worth asking. If the sub-base is sound and the problem is a sunken area, blocks can be lifted, the base corrected and the same blocks relaid. If the blocks are a discontinued range the colour match on any replacements will not be exact, so we lift from an inconspicuous area and use the new ones there.
