Bedford resin bound driveways
What these jobs look like in Bedford.
Resin bound is a 15–18mm layer of graded aggregate mixed with a clear UV-stable resin and trowelled out into a seamless, porous surface. It has two properties that Bedford homeowners tend to want: no joints for weeds, and genuine permeability, which matters on a town with a river through the middle of it.
The demand here skews high relative to the town's size, largely because so much of Bedford's recent housing at Wixams, Great Denham and Shortstown already has a hard base in place that resin can be laid over.
Resin, clay and the drainage question
On Oxford Clay, the phrase permeable driveway needs a second look. Resin bound lets water through it — but if the water arrives at a layer of clay that will not take it, you have built a shallow pond with a lid. A permeable build-up on Bedford clay has to include a sub-base with enough void space to store the water and, on tighter plots, an outlet to release it slowly. When we quote resin over a new base here, that storage layer is an itemised line, because it is a real cost and the reason two resin quotes can differ by thousands.
Over an existing drive
The cheapest good resin job in Bedford is over an intact tarmac drive. No dig, no spoil, no skip, and a new surface in a day. Before quoting we check the base for cracking, movement and standing water — and if the fall is wrong, resin will not correct it, so that gets addressed first or the job is not worth doing.
Over block paving, we do not recommend it. The blocks move independently and the joint lines come through the resin within a couple of years.
A note on the cheap end of the market
Resin is unusually easy to sell badly, because the finished surface looks identical on day one whether the resin-to-aggregate ratio was right, whether the resin was UV stable, and whether the base was ready. The differences show up in year two: yellowing on a non-UV-stable resin, loose stone where the mix was resin-starved, and cracks mapping through from a base that was never sound.
Ask any resin quote which system is being used, what the coverage rate is, and what the base preparation includes. A quote that cannot answer those is a price, not a specification.

Bedford driveway questions.
Is resin bound suitable for Bedford clay?
Yes, provided the build-up underneath is designed for it. The resin layer is permeable regardless; the question is whether the water has somewhere to go once it is through. On clay that means an open-graded sub-base with storage capacity, and sometimes a controlled outlet.
How long before I can park on a new resin driveway?
Foot traffic the same evening in most conditions, vehicles after roughly 24 hours. Cold weather extends both. We will not lay it in the wrong conditions to hit a date — a rushed resin surface is a permanent problem, not a temporary one.
Does resin fade?
A UV-stable resin holds its colour well. The yellowing people have seen on older resin drives is a non-UV-stable system, which is cheaper and still on the market. It is worth knowing which one you are being quoted for.
Can resin go over a cracked concrete drive?
Not without dealing with the cracks first, and sometimes not at all. Resin follows what is underneath it. If the concrete is cracked because the ground beneath it is moving, resin over the top will crack in the same lines within a couple of winters.
