Tarmac driveways in Milton Keynes.

Tarmac driveways in Milton Keynes make the most sense on longer drives and older estates, where the cost per square metre matters more than the look of individual blocks.

Milton Keynes tarmac driveways

What these jobs look like in Milton Keynes.

Most Milton Keynes estate drives are block paved, so tarmac is the less obvious choice here. It earns its place in three situations: longer drives and shared accesses where area drives the price, older drives in places like Bletchley, Wolverton and Newport Pagnell that were tarmac to begin with, and resurfacing jobs where the base underneath is still doing its job.

It is also the surface people most often get a poor version of. A thin layer rolled straight over a weak base looks fine for a year and then cracks, dips and frays at the edges. The difference between a tarmac drive that lasts and one that does not is almost entirely below the surface and at the edges.

Tarmac on Milton Keynes clay

Much of Milton Keynes sits on Oxford Clay, which moves with the seasons. Tarmac is flexible enough to tolerate a little of that, but not a base that was never built properly. On a new tarmac drive here we would expect to see the old surface and soft ground dug out, a membrane down, a well compacted stone sub-base, a base course and then the wearing course, with the edges held by kerbs or edging so they cannot spread. The permeable-surfacing rules for front gardens apply too, so the drive has to fall to a soakaway, a channel draining to a permeable area, or a lawn or bed within the property.

New tarmac or resurfacing?

If the existing drive is tarmac or concrete, has no deep cracks, holds its levels and does not flood, a new wearing course over the top can be a sound and much cheaper job. If it has dips, cracks that open and close with the seasons, or edges breaking away, the problem is the base, and a new top layer will fail the same way.

The way to tell is to look at it with the owner at a survey, sometimes with a small test dig at a failing edge. We would rather say "resurface" and lose the bigger job than sell a full rebuild that was not needed.

Longer drives and shared accesses

Tarmac becomes better value the bigger the area. On a long approach drive or a shared private access serving several houses, the cost per square metre gap between tarmac and block paving adds up quickly. Where an access is shared, it is worth agreeing between the households who pays what before anyone quotes, and establishing who actually owns the surface.

What a proper tarmac quote should list

Dig-out depth and disposal, membrane, sub-base depth and material, base course and wearing course thicknesses, how the edges are restrained, and how the drive will drain. A quote that gives one total and the word "tarmac" leaves you no way to compare it.

How it works

How a Milton Keynes driveway job runs.

Four stages. The timings below are what these jobs really take, not the best case with everything going right.

  1. 01

    Send us the basics

Postcode, rough size, and what is there now. A photo of the existing drive from the pavement tells us more than a paragraph does.

Same day, usually within a few hours.

  2. 02

    Site survey

Someone comes out, measures up, checks levels and finds out where the water currently goes. This is also when access gets checked, a machine that cannot reach the back of the plot changes the price.

Typically within a week of your enquiry.

  3. 03

    Itemised written quote

Dig depth, sub-base type and thickness, edging, drainage solution, surface material and make-good. Separate lines, so you can hold it against another quote and see where they differ.

2–3 working days after the survey.

  4. 04

    Installation

A typical two-car driveway is three to five working days on site: dig out and cart away, lay and compact the sub-base, edge it, then surface it. Resin and concrete both need a dry weather window, so dates move in a wet week.

Lead time depends on the season, spring and early autumn are the busiest.

FAQ

Milton Keynes driveway questions.

How much does a tarmac driveway cost in Milton Keynes?

As an indicative range, around £45 to £90 per square metre installed, depending on how much needs digging out, the base required and access. Resurfacing over a sound base sits at the lower end. The survey settles the figure.

How long does a tarmac drive last?

Built properly, fifteen to twenty years is a fair expectation. The ones that fail early nearly always had a thin base or unrestrained edges.

Can I drive on new tarmac straight away?

Usually within a day, but avoid turning the wheels while stationary in hot weather for the first few weeks, because fresh tarmac marks more easily.

Is tarmac allowed on a front garden in Milton Keynes?

Yes, as long as the water drains into the ground within your property rather than onto the road, or you get planning permission. The same rules apply everywhere in England.

Do you charge for a quote or a survey?

No. The survey and the written quote are free and carry no obligation. We would rather look at the job properly than price it off a photograph and revise it later.

How long is a quote valid for?

Long enough to compare it against others without being rushed. If material prices move we will tell you before the work is booked rather than after it has started.

Do you take a deposit?

A deposit covers materials once a date is agreed, with the balance on completion. It is set out on the quote before you commit to anything.
