Milton Keynes driveway cleaning
What these jobs look like in Milton Keynes.
Most of the drives on Milton Keynes estates built from the 1990s onwards are block paving, and after fifteen or twenty years they tend to look the same: moss and algae in the shade, dark tyre tracks, black lichen spots and weeds in the joints. A good clean brings most of that back. A careless one strips the jointing sand, lets the blocks move and gives the weeds a better home than they had before.
So a proper driveway clean is three stages: clean, re-sand the joints, and, if you want it, seal. We will tell you at the quote whether sealing is worth it on your drive, because it is not always.
Tree-lined estates and north-facing drives in Milton Keynes grow algae and moss far faster than open, sunny ones, and the clay under much of the city holds moisture near the surface. That is why the same drive can look fine at the front and green by the garage. It also means cleaning alone is a short-term fix on a drive that stays damp: re-sanding the joints properly, and sometimes improving how water runs off, makes the result last.
Why the joints matter more than the clean
The sand between block paving is what locks the blocks together. High pressure water aimed at the joints washes it out, and without it the blocks start to rock and the edges spread. A good clean uses a rotary surface cleaner to keep the pressure on the face of the blocks, then refills every joint with kiln-dried sand afterwards.
If your drive has already lost its sand and the blocks move when you step on them, cleaning will not fix that. In that case lifting and relaying the affected area is the right answer.
Patios and resin
Patios and resin drives need a gentler approach. Natural stone and porcelain can be marked by the wrong chemical or too much pressure, and resin bound surfaces are cleaned at low pressure so the stones are not loosened. We check the surface before choosing the method rather than using one approach for everything.
Should you seal?
Sealing can hold the jointing sand in place, slow down weeds and make oil easier to lift. It also costs extra and has to be reapplied every few years. On a sunny drive in good condition it is often not worth it. On a shaded drive that goes green every winter, it can be. We give both prices so you can choose.
How it works
How a Milton Keynes driveway job runs.
Four stages. The timings below are what these jobs really take, not the best case with everything going right.
-
01
Send us the basics
Postcode, rough size, and what is there now. A photo of the existing drive from the pavement tells us more than a paragraph does.
Same day, usually within a few hours.
-
02
Site survey
Someone comes out, measures up, checks levels and finds out where the water currently goes. This is also when access gets checked, a machine that cannot reach the back of the plot changes the price.
Typically within a week of your enquiry.
-
03
Itemised written quote
Dig depth, sub-base type and thickness, edging, drainage solution, surface material and make-good. Separate lines, so you can hold it against another quote and see where they differ.
2–3 working days after the survey.
-
04
Installation
A typical two-car driveway is three to five working days on site: dig out and cart away, lay and compact the sub-base, edge it, then surface it. Resin and concrete both need a dry weather window, so dates move in a wet week.
Lead time depends on the season, spring and early autumn are the busiest.
FAQ
Milton Keynes driveway questions.
How often should a driveway be cleaned?
Most block paved drives in Milton Keynes look after themselves for two or three years after a proper clean and re-sand. Shaded drives may need attention sooner.
Will cleaning get rid of oil stains?
Fresh oil usually comes out well. Old stains that have soaked into the blocks may fade rather than disappear, and on block paving the cleaner fix is sometimes to swap the affected blocks.
Do weeds come back after cleaning?
They come back much more slowly once the joints are properly re-sanded, and slower again if the drive is sealed. Weed seeds arrive on the wind, so no treatment stops them for ever.
Can you clean the patio at the same time?
Yes. It is usually cheaper to do both on one visit than to book them separately.
Do you charge for a quote or a survey?
No. The survey and the written quote are free and carry no obligation. We would rather look at the job properly than price it off a photograph and revise it later.
How long is a quote valid for?
Long enough to compare it against others without being rushed. If material prices move we will tell you before the work is booked rather than after it has started.
Do you take a deposit?
A deposit covers materials once a date is agreed, with the balance on completion. It is set out on the quote before you commit to anything.
